The US Justice Department have entered the fray in a legal challenge initiated by California Republicans, aiming to prevent the state's recently passed electoral boundaries.
This court case, submitted to federal court, targets the redistricting plan supported by the state's Democratic governor, which was developed in response to a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"California's electoral map represents a brazen power grab that tramples on voting rights and mocks the electoral system," stated the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have expressed confidence that the new maps will survive court challenges.
"These opponents were defeated in the election and they are likely to face defeat in the judicial system," commented a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Constitutional Challenge
The legal challenge asserts that California's map improperly used racial considerations to heavily favor Hispanic voters in contravention of the federal constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a substitute to advance political interests, but that is exactly what the state legislature did with the redistricting measure," stated a high-ranking representative from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
The legal battle represents the major counterpunch by the Democratic party in the continuing redistricting war that began in Texas and has spread across various parts of the country.
In contrast to elsewhere, where GOP-controlled legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan needed voter approval, which it received with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
National Implications
Democrats need to flip just a small number of GOP-controlled House seats to gain majority of the chamber in next year's congressional elections.
The party that holds the controlling share will shape the remaining period of the current administration, deciding if a unified Republican Congress will persist in implementing its political program or face resistance, congressional probes and potential additional obstacles.
