Individuals Coming Off Slimming Jabs Regain Weight Four Times Faster Than Dieters

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

A recent study indicates that patients who discontinue blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain reduced body mass much more quickly than those who halt traditional diet and exercise programs.

Findings released in a major health publication demonstrates that while obese people frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Users purchasing such medications need to be informed of the danger of fast weight regain when the treatment is stopped," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery implies a reversion to original weight within about 18 months.

Comparing Approaches

The research, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the effects of the injectable medications with other pills.

The team point out that people who lose weight through diet and exercise usually have a more gradual weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Understanding the Quick Rebound

Doctors suggest the way of the injections accounts for the heightened regain.

The injections copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls hunger.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating much more probable."

A Chronic Disease?

Medical guidelines advise the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals say that, due to the high risk of relapse, the treatment should be considered ongoing.

This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "highlight the persistent nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.

User Experiences

People who have discontinued the jabs explain a powerful return of cravings.

"It felt as if a trigger that goes on and you're instantly starving," said one woman.

This difficulty is compounded if patients have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Significant Interest

Recent estimates indicate that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with interest being substantial.

  • Adoption is more common among women than males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Finally, experts emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and lasting health benefits likely depends on combined lifestyle support.
