The former Brazilian leader has been arrested after authorities found he posed a concrete flight risk while under home confinement.

The one-time leader was convicted of plotting a government overthrow in September and sentenced more than a 27-year term in jail, but he continued under home detention pending appeals.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice the presiding justice said the move to detain the septuagenarian politician was a preventative measure after fresh information were revealed.

This involved trying to remove his electronic bracelet and a invitation to a public vigil that could facilitate a potential flight.

Court Filing Details Flight Fears

In a document approving the custody, the judge said intelligence from the centre monitoring Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the ex-president's plan to remove the electronic ankle bracelet to guarantee victory in his getaway".

This, it said, would be assisted by the chaos caused by the protest called by his offspring.

His child, his son Flávio, who serves as a congressional representative, called for a meeting of his backers near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday night.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on online platforms on last Friday: "Are you going to fight for your nation, or observe everything from your phone there on your sofa? I urge you to battle with us."

He said the gathering would be so supporters could offer prayers for his physical condition and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our nation."

Foreign Shelter Risks

Part of the magistrate's decision was the possibility of his move to diplomatic missions near the residence, considering that the investigations revealed a background of organizing to seek refuge through a embassy office", a statement said.

The court filing underscores that the United States embassy in the national capital, Brasilia, is situated around approximately 13 kilometers from the former president's residence.

Global Responses

Bolsonaro's legal woes have drawn the ire of fellow right-wing populist United States President Donald Trump, causing him to impose a fifty percent tax on imports of Brazilian goods.

Bolsonaro is being held in a Federal Police station in Brazil's capital city and will undergo a custody hearing on Sunday.

Latest Court Petitions

It was only on the previous day that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the Top Court to permit him to complete his entire prison term under domestic detention, with digital surveillance.

They also petitioned that Bolsonaro be permitted to exit his dwelling for medical treatment, saying he demanded ongoing care for lung conditions and other illnesses.

Context of Sentencing

The former president was found guilty of orchestrating a plot aimed at retaining his authority after he lost the 2022 election to his left-wing rival, President Lula.

Top judicial officials said that he had knowledge of a plan which encompassed plans to murder his opponent and his running partner, Geraldo Alckmin, and to detain and kill Alexandre de Moraes - the High Court judge who has been presiding over Bolsonaro's trial.

The plot was thwarted because it couldn't obtain the endorsement of the military leaders. His successor was inaugurated without incident on 1 January 2023.

But a following week, on 8 January, many his backers attacked and damaged official structures in the national capital, Brazil's capital.

The law enforcement took action and around fifteen hundred individuals were arrested.

The justices found that the demonstrators had been provoked by him whose plan, they said, was for the Brazilian military to take action, bring back stability and reinstate his authority.

At the moment, his attorneys called the 27 years and three months sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also barred from seeking elected position until twenty-sixty - eight years later after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The one-time head of state called the legal proceedings a "witch hunt and said it was intended to stop him participating in the next presidential race.
