Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for hours when dozens of them floated into the country's airspace.

The operational halt led to 30 flight cancellations affecting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that multiple atmospheric balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two balloons ending up directly over the aviation facility.
As many as 14 of the atmospheric instruments sent during the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and close to the border with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
No fewer than 11 balloons carrying numerous containers of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though additional discoveries are expected, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in the Baltic region and Poland."
To date in the current year, numerous meteorological balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.

Simultaneously, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of numerous instances in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the balloons.

In response to questions about why criminal organizations employ a method that is highly susceptible to weather elements rather than easier to manage drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible volumes of smuggled items and to detain organisers and participants so that this activity become unprofitable and create minimal risk to passenger aircraft."
